Nature of Jesus: He is Powerful and Sovereign

Continuing in our study of the Nature of Jesus.

In many conversations about Jesus, we often emphasize His compassion, His mercy, and His willingness to forgive. These are essential truths. But if we stop there, we miss something equally vital: Jesus is not only gracious—He is sovereign. He is not just a gentle Savior; He is also the reigning Lord over all creation.

Colossians 1:17 gives us a striking picture: “He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.” This is not poetic exaggeration—it is a declaration of authority. Jesus stands outside of time, preceding everything that exists. More than that, He actively sustains it. The universe does not simply run on its own momentum; it holds together because of Him.

This means His power is not distant or theoretical. It is present and active. Every breath, every heartbeat, every natural law operates under His authority. The stars remain in place, the oceans stay within their boundaries, and life itself continues because He wills it.

Throughout the Gospels, we see glimpses of this sovereignty in action. Jesus speaks, and storms are silenced. He commands, and demons flee. He calls, and the dead rise. These moments are not random miracles—they are revelations of His identity. They show us that His authority extends over nature, the spiritual realm, and even death itself.

Yet His sovereignty is not cold or detached. It is purposeful. Jesus does not wield power for display, but for redemption. His authority over life and death is ultimately demonstrated at the cross and the empty tomb. He lays down His life willingly and takes it up again, proving that even death answers to Him.

Understanding Jesus as sovereign changes how we relate to Him. He is not simply a helper we turn to in times of need—He is the Lord we trust in all things. His plans are not uncertain, and His rule is not temporary. He reigns with intention, wisdom, and perfect control.

This truth offers both comfort and challenge. It comforts us because nothing is outside His reach. No situation is too chaotic, no burden too heavy, no outcome beyond His authority. At the same time, it challenges us to surrender. If Jesus truly holds all power, then our lives are not our own to control—they are His to lead.

To follow Jesus, then, is not just to admire His kindness, but to submit to His lordship. It is to recognize that the One who saves us is also the One who reigns over us.

And that is good news.
