Jesus Nature: Holy and Righteous

Continuing in the study of Jesus Nature.

Jesus Christ stands at the center of Christian faith not merely as a teacher or prophet, but as the perfect embodiment of holiness and righteousness. These two attributes are not abstract theological ideas; they define who He is in His very nature and how He relates to humanity.

The Holiness of Jesus

Holiness speaks to being set apart, pure, and untouched by sin. Jesus did not simply act holy—He is holy in His essence. Scripture affirms this clearly:

“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35, KJV)

From His birth, Jesus was identified as “that holy thing.” Unlike every other human, He was not marked by a sinful nature. Throughout His life, He remained entirely without sin:

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15, KJV)

This sinlessness is essential. It means Jesus was not only morally upright but completely pure in thought, word, and deed. His holiness set Him apart from all humanity and qualified Him to be the perfect sacrifice.

The Righteousness of Jesus

Righteousness refers to being in perfect alignment with God’s law and character. Jesus didn’t just teach righteousness—He lived it flawlessly. Every action He took was just, every decision aligned with the will of the Father.

“And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (1 John 2:1, KJV)

Jesus is explicitly called “the righteous.” This title highlights His role as the one who stands in right relationship with God and, remarkably, makes that relationship available to others.

The prophet Isaiah foretold this aspect of Christ’s nature:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given… and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6, KJV)

While this verse highlights His divine identity, His life demonstrated that divine righteousness in action—healing, forgiving, and upholding justice without compromise.

Why His Nature Matters

Jesus’ holiness and righteousness are not just qualities to admire—they are the foundation of salvation. Because He was without sin, He could take on the sins of others:

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, KJV)

This exchange is at the heart of the gospel. His perfect righteousness is credited to those who believe, while their sin is placed upon Him.

Living in Light of His Nature

Understanding Jesus as holy and righteous calls for a response. Believers are invited not only to trust in Him but also to reflect His character:

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;” (1 Peter 1:15, KJV)

While no one can attain His perfection, His life becomes the model and the motivation for pursuing a life set apart for God.
