The Eternality of Jesus Christ

Continuing our study in the Nature of Jesus

Jesus Christ is eternal, unchanging, and present before creation itself. The King James Version presents Him as the Word who existed with God from the beginning, the one who is “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Before creation

The Gospel of John opens with one of the clearest statements of Christ’s eternality: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This means Jesus did not begin at Bethlehem; He already existed before time and the world were made. John continues, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3).

Before Abraham

Jesus also testified to His own eternal nature when He said, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). That statement is not only about preexistence, but about divine identity. Christ is not merely older than Abraham; He is the eternal “I am,” revealing His oneness with God’s eternal being.

Before all things

Paul writes, “He is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17). Jesus is not part of creation but the One who sustains it. His power is not limited to history; He upholds all things at every moment.

Forever unchanged

Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” This verse gives believers great confidence. The Christ who taught, healed, died, and rose again remains exactly who He has always been. His promises do not weaken, and His character does not shift.

From everlasting

Micah 5:2 speaks of the promised ruler whose “goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” This prophecy points to the Messiah as one whose origins are beyond human history. The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem did not mark the beginning of His existence, only the beginning of His earthly life.

Why it matters

The eternality of Jesus means His salvation is sure, His authority is absolute, and His presence is always near. A temporary savior could not give lasting hope, but an eternal Christ can. Because Jesus has no beginning and no end, His people can trust Him fully for today and forever.

Closing thought

The KJV reveals Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God, the Creator, the Sustainer, and the unchanging Lord. He is not bound by time, and His kingdom will never fail. That truth gives the Christian faith its deepest hope and strongest foundation.
